5 Biggest Mistakes People Make With Their Clothing

Lifestyle

5 Jun

The way that we dress may seem like nothing more than a small detail in the grand scheme of things. And while it very well may be less important than some things in life, it’s essentially the image that we portray to the world. In truth, your clothing speaks volumes about who you are as a person and your attention to detail.

Not to mention, it plays a big role in your professional life. If you want to be taken seriously in a professional environment, the clothing that you wear plays an enormously important role. Yet, even the most stylish people can make mistakes once in a while. Here are some of the biggest clothing mistakes people make and how to avoid them.

Not Following Care Instructions

Each item of clothing that you buy will come with a certain set of instructions. The tag will list whether something needs to be dry cleaned, washed in cold water, or air-dried. These instructions are put there for a reason: to help you extend the life of your clothing. If you tend to ignore these instructions, then you’re making a big mistake. Clothing costs money, and this is especially true if you tend to buy high-end labels.

Do yourself a favor and don’t mistreat your clothing. Follow the care instructions and you’ll find that you get much more wear out of your clothes long term.

Wearing Ill-Fitting Clothing

Perhaps you found something on sale and it’s just slightly above your regular size—or maybe slightly below. Because you love the piece of clothing so much, maybe you’re willing to wear it a little extra baggy or tight. Unfortunately, wearing clothes that don’t fit can ruin an otherwise great outfit. You want to wear tailored clothing that flatters your figure and elevates your entire appearance. You don’t want to make it look like you’re forcing yourself to fit into something. If something doesn’t fit quite right, then don’t force it.

Forcing Trends on Yourself

Trends come and go, and in an effort to stay current, you might feel pressured to embrace these trends. Yet, prioritizing your own personal style should always come first. If you decide to force a trend on yourself that you don’t necessarily like, then you’re not really being true to yourself.

Chasing trends doesn’t just make you look like a wannabe, but it can also lead to a wardrobe that feels disjointed and incohesive. Try to embrace trends that truly speak to you and that you sincerely like. Remember, you should wear clothing—clothing shouldn’t wear you.

Neglecting Grooming

Even the most expensive outfit can get completely ruined by poor grooming. It’s important that, in addition to your outfit, you also pay close attention to your hair and makeup. Not to mention, your clothing should be pressed, steamed, and free of any stains if you hope to look your best.
